scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='double glazed window maintenance'/>
The window that never rots, never splits

We've already talked about what makes upvc double glazing so energy efficient, but of course lowering energy bills is only part of the appeal of modern upvc windows.

Homeowners are equally attracted by the low maintenance and long life of upvc installations, and with good reason.

Upvc windows have been with us for over 25 years now and many of those early installations are still going strong.

But tastes and technology moves on in leaps and bounds and many homeowners are now replacing first-generation upvc windows with new installations.

Aside from a little cleaning and the occasional lubrication of moving parts like hinges and locks, you can expect a long life from your 'plastic' windows.

Compared to wooden windows, which require a re-coat or fresh paint every few years, and it's not hard to see why so many of us choose upvc windows.

They never rot or split, and the first generation problems of some warping occurring have long been addressed with frame design and installation techniques.

Discolouration? That's another problem from another era. Modern plastic extrusion - the stuff frames are made from - includes ingredients that fix the colour and prevent the fading effects of strong sunlight.

Culturally, the amount of 'free' time we now get and how we spend that free time has changed dramatically. One sign of this is the increase in low-maintenance gardens with larger patio and decked areas. In the modern age, we simply don't seem to have the time to do all those exterior maintenance jobs we once used to. This included stripping, prepping and re-painting the exterior of wooden windows.

*This article first appeared in our weekly homeowner newsletter - issue 21st February 2011.

More posts at Home Improvement Quotes Blog

We've been re-jigging how we get the latest double glazing and replacement window news to our army of followers, following the continued success of our weekly newsletters.

We'll still continue to make the odd upvc window related post here but for all the latest home improvement news, why not head over to our dedicated blog - Home Improvement Quotes Blog.

In addition to regular news articles, we also repeat the headlines and articles from those weekly newsletters.

If renewable energy is your thing, then we have a special renewable energy blog Even though a-rated windows use a particular form of spacer in the manufacture of the sealed glazing unit itself that doesn't transfer heat as much as normal c-rated glazed unit spacers, some heat transfer is inevitable.

In really low temperatures, exterior condensation is likely to freeze - again, just like a car window.

Whilst a-rated and coated glass is generally as tough as ordinary glass, it can scratch if wiped or scraped with stones etc trapped in the cloth or other surface you're using so take care.

if you're worried about the issue of condensation, you could explore fitting a less efficient window e.g a c-rated design.

Of course seeing condensation forming on your new windows can be a bit alarming, however a call to your installer is usually enough to reassure you that it's a normal part of owning the most advanced, thermally efficient windows on the market today.

The market is already aware of the problem and ideas like a form of self-cleaning coating (like the kind currently available which encourages rain to 'run-off' windows) will no doubt be explored. In the meantime, a little condensation is the price for ultimate energy efficiency in the home.

We've not read any reports of similar issues with c-rated windows, however the more thermally efficient a window is, the more likelihood it will suffer some form of exterior condensation.

A Glass for every Conservatory roof.

Glass technology has being keeping pace with the popular and rising demand for glass roofs in conservatories. This increase in demand may be due to more homeowners viewing a conservatory as an extension to their living space rather than the addition of an occasional room for the Summer.

So when homeowners are discussing their conservatory specification for a quote, it's worth remembering the options are that readily available.

For example, you can now specify glass roofs (and side panels to) with anti-glare coatings, which reduce the suns glare. These coatings are very useful in roofs and do not affect the light levels.

You may prefer to combine anti-glare properties with coatings that reflect the sun's heat carrying waves. This blocks the suns energy keeping conservatories cooler in the Summer and warmer in the Winter by reflecting warmth back into the interior of the conservatory.

It reduces energy bills in both heating and cooling with it's improved U-values, just like a-rated energy efficient window coatings.

Finally, you can also specify coatings which help keep the glass clean by encouraging self-washing. Ideal again for roofs, these durable coatings work by encouraging organic matter to break down in the sunlight so that when it rains, the rainwater washes off the dirt accumulation. The glass surface is usually hydrophilic which means rain water runs off without leaving water droplets which can dry and leave unsightly spots.

Of course all these different options come at a cost but it's worth knowing in advance what is available and discussing with your preferred conservatory company if they offer these coated glasses.

We've noticed some incredible deals on offer around the country at the moment, for example free upgrades to glass roofs from the normal polycarbonate roofs, which could make extra coatings a very worth while exercise in your future comfort and enjoyment of your conservatory - all year round.

Visit Window Quoter for your free online conservatory quote now.

Government says no to Double Glazing Scrappage Scheme - make do with Green Deal

Despite individual window companies offering customers 'scrappage scheme' discounts on double glazing, there's been no official Government campaign like the motor trade scheme the window companies have, and continue to copy.

However, after being petitioned by the glazing industry, the Government has finally responded.

Whilst it says it won't entertain an outright national scrappage scheme for replacement windows, even though it admits the cost of a full house installation could be on a par with purchasing a new car, it expects "double glazing will be one of the measures that can be installed under the Green Deal".

The Green Deal is a scheme where energy companies and high street stores will be required to finance insulation and other energy efficiency measures in homes upfront. The costs will then be paid back by the homeowner through their energy bills based on the energy savings they make. Effectively, the homeowner doesn't benefit from cheaper energy bills, but does get the value of the improvements.

Key properties that will be targeted are those that are difficult or expensive to heat - properties without cavity wall insulation and residential areas of fuel poverty.

Local authorities are helping the Government identify those homes and areas that will benefit most from a Green Deal.

It's not all bad news for homeowners then (or the double glazing industry which was hoping for a welcome boost to sales on the back of a nationally recognised scheme) but in the meantime, there will always be window companies offering superb individual money saving offers including their own scrappage schemes and finance options.

If you're interested in offers, keep a close eye out for VAT free offers. There are quite a few about now but expect the number to increase the nearer to December we get, ahead of the VAT increase to 20% in January.

Are you interested in getting a local scrappage scheme style discount when replacing your old windows and doors? The latest frame designs will keep your home warmer than ever before, minimalising heat loss and draughts with their multi-chamber thermally efficient designs, whilst new glass technology encompasses everything from special heat reflective coatings to self cleaning, not to mention gas filled cavities meaning 'a' rated energy efficient glazing is now a popular option for buyers.

Homeowners replacing old Upvc double glazing were also worried about the environmental aspects of old frames being sent to landfill or worse, them being responsible for getting rid of the old windows.

It's worth pointing out that Upvc windows and doors can actual be re-cycled. Modern production methods where the frame extrusion is first manufactured mean that Upvc can be recycled many times before it becomes unsuitable for re-use.

There's been several high-profile extrusion and window companies campaigning for a national scheme to cover the collection and reclamation of old windows and this has had considerable success.

So when your choosing a new window company, you can rest assured that many will be recycling the old windows they'll remove.

You see, there really is no need to feel guilty anymore about replacing old 1st generation upvc double glazing.

Have you got old double glazed windows in poor condition or are you interested in replacing your old windows and doors with a new 'a' rated energy efficient installation? If you've been unfortunate enough to be burgled or had keys stolen, then you may also want to be able to change your locks.

Perhaps the keys aren't working as well as they used to or the lock starts to 'play-up' and doesn't lock etc. These are signs that your lock should be replaced sooner, rather than later when it might have already failed, locking you out or making it impossible to open the door. An essential part of the plan to remove and refit a lock yourself, without having to call a Locksmith.

Upvc doors usually have just the one lock which operates the various locking latches and bolts. This single barrel lock is usually a style referred to as a euro-cylinder.

It's very straightforward to replace - you'll just need a few minutes, an appropriate screwdriver (for the one retaining screw) and the new lock to replace it with. With the door ajar, looking at the narrow face with the catch in it, look for a screw head in the door which lines up with the lock barrel.

Put your key in the lock and then undo the screw you located.

Now turn the key slightly to line up the lever inside with the shape of the key-barrel slot.

You'll feel it move quite easily as you then pull the whole barrel out.

Measure the barrel length to ensure you get the right replacement, If there isn't one in your size, then I'd go for larger rather than smaller. A smaller length barrel may recess into the door / lock surround and present an opportunity for the weather to collect in the barrel hole itself.

Fitting the new barrel is a reverse of the above. Don't forget to put your key in the lock first so you can turn the locking lever to be inline with the rest of he barrel when you fit it into the hole in the door.

Fitting a new window lock usually involves replacing the handle as well. To get a replacement, you'll need to identify which type of handle you have and the length of the shaft that fits into the window. They are usually one of 3 types - the most popular being the Espag handle. It usually has a concealment plate above the handle. It's spindle can vary in length so check carefully before you re-order.

The next most popular is the Cockspur handle which features a small arm or lug which locates under or over a lock on the opposite bit of frame when shut. Caution as there'll be left and right hand versions!

Finally, Tilt n turn handles are different again, usually being designed to travel through 180 degrees.

Replacing the handle (incorporating the lock) is a matter of finding the screws which attach the handle to the frame, usually concealed behind a 'vanity' plate - a small section which should just prise out.

If it's a matter of a missing key, then there are several online resources who will work from a photo of your lock to identify the correct key replacement and send it to you.

If the lock failure is on a more recent window installation, then try contacting your window company first as the fault may be covered under their warranty or if not, they may still be able to source the replacement handle / key for you.

If you don't have any luck tracking down replacement locks or handles, then you may want to consider getting the professionals in. You can always enquire online about the costs of replacing individual windows by using WindowQuoter.

*This story first appeared in our July 5th Homeowner Newsletter.

How to protect yourself when buying double glazing

The Federation of Small Businesses has warned that a new scheme designed to offer homeowners more protection from rogue double glazing companies could rule out many smaller local window companies that offer sterling service.

The new ombudsmen scheme (DGCOS) has been trialling for four years now and involves a vetting process which includes members detailing past orders as well as demonstrating a minimum 10 year guarantee which includes public liability insurance on actual installations.

Customers of member companies will also benefit from a deposit protection scheme backed up by the ombudsmen scheme rather than the company.

However, the Federation warns that the high costs to members could preclude many smaller, family firms from being able to join.

It says that one of the best ways to ensure you're using a reliable company is to take note of personal recommendations and comments left by previous customers.

At WindowQuoter, we also believe homeowner feedback is one of the best ways to help a homeowner decide which double glazing company to use. Ask your installer to cut the hole and fit the flap for you. You'll need to ensure the cat flap is insulated from the door panel if its magnetically operated as the steel panels inside the door may lock kitty out.

If you're doing the fitting yourself, then best advice seems to be use as fine a saw blade as possible to avoid rough edges. The fine edge will also help when it comes to cutting through a usually present thin metal sheet in the middle of the panel. Mask the area off to avoid scratches on the door panel.

If the cat flap is to be fitted into a double glazed glass panel, then you'll need to discuss this with the window company prior to ordering as the hole must be included when the glass panel is actually made.

It is possible to find cat flaps that have slender frames and will actually fit into a sliding patio door without fowling the sliding mechanism/action when one pane slides behind another.

One other tip we've picked up on - cat flaps come with varying widths of 'tunnel' to connect the two doors with through the door itself. Upvc 'solid' panels tend to be thinner than wooden / composite doors so check the kit you're buying carefully for suitability.

Check out your local companies and their prices all from the comfort of your own home with Window Quoter - instant online quotes and homeowner feedback.

A Guide to Trade Bodies and Organisations related to the double glazing industry

Jargon Buster - A Guide to Trade Bodies and Organisations related to the double glazing industry.

Some are purely trade associations whilst others are more focused on protecting the consumer rather than the company - offering everything from guarantees to arbitration services should the need arise. They will often have their own codes of conduct and standards that continued membership relies on adhering to.

But what do they all mean and what or who exactly to they protect? Here's a round up of the more common ones you're likely to come across when comparing quotes from double glazing companies.

FENSA - usually followed by a membership number:
FENSA stands for the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme and was set up by the GGF (more on them below). One of the advantages of using a FENSA registered company is that when having new windows fitted, a FENSA registered company will be able to issue the required thermal performance certificate of compliance (energy rating certificate). FENSA is there to protect the homeowner.

GGF - Glass & Glazing Federation:
A trade association which represents companies who make, supply or fit glass and glass related products. GGF members are required to protect homeowners deposits. Members work to a code of practice - their conduct is monitored and regulated and your finished installation will comply with the Building Regulations. The GGF also provides a free conciliation service should a company and homeowner fail to settle any grievance.

BBA:
Recognised throughout the construction industry, providing information on the performance of construction materials and products.
Specifically - the BBA issue Agrèment Certificates which assess the competency of a company to install products acceptable to building regulations, councils and insurers alike.

Fairtrades - A multi trade association which helps members via increased marketing and awareness:
The homeowner benefits from using a quality company which adheres to the values of the Fairtrades Homeowner's Charter which expects it members to demonstrate the highest levels of customer service etc.

Trustmark - A not for profit organisation supported by the Government:
The badge reads "Government Endorsed Standards" - It means a firms skills have been independently checked through regular on-site inspections as well as checks having been made on their trading record and financial status. It's also supported by the building industry and consumer protection groups.

Secure by Design - Police initiative themed on designing out crime:
Products must have passed Secure by Design test standards. With an emphasis on home security and products standing up to intruders attempts to gain access. In the case of window and door design, this will cover areas like hinge protection as well as the locks themselves and the overall design of the window or door.

Energy Saving Trust - An organisation set up to help everybody use energy efficiently with the aim of reducing carbon emissions:
Working in collaboration with companies to help them engage customers and employees to save energy and recycle waste. With particular reference to housing and building professions, providing technical guidance and solutions to design, build and refurbish properties to a high level of energy efficiency.

FMB - Federation of Master Builders:
Promotes members as dependable, quality builders and tradespeople. It is the largest trade association in the UK building industry. They have their own complaint resolution service for the benefit of members and members customers.

CPA - Consumer Protection Association:
Another reliable contractor service - the CPA makes finding a safe, reliable contractor easier - its members are all fully vetted professional trades to ensure "impeccable standards of best practice are maintained". They offer their own guarantees and protection services for homeowners and tradesmen alike.

BS British Standards - the 'Kite Marks':
We've all seen the Kite Marks on everyday goods. There are specific BS Standards that refer to the build, strength, safety, security and thermal qualities of windows, doors and conservatories etc.
Most Kite Marks refer to the original manufacture of the frame or lock and not necessarily the installation company, although there are now BS standards for installation too.

Many of the trade associations listed above have membership fees which companies must renew annually. In addition, they may carry out independent checks and reviews that a particular member is upholding standards. Some like the CPA do carry out customer satisfaction surveys, the results of which may be published by the company or the CPA themselves.

At the end of the day, it is up to you - the homeowner - to satisfy yourself that the company you wish to engage to provide your home improvement is reliable and will do what it has agreed to. Whilst trade associations can help prove the 'worthiness' of a company, you may feel that speaking with previous customers or viewing work already carried out locally by a company is a good idea.

The WindowQuoter website provides the first step to re-assurance by giving you an online guide price for the work you want doing. You'll also get the opportunity to view first-hand feedback from other homeowners who've used companies local to you, to help you decide whether they're the right company for you and your home.

Getting your conservatory ready for the summer.

Did you know that in 2004 alone, over 270,000 conservatories were installed on properties around the UK?

That's a lot of conservatories, but how many get a regular Spring clean? The days are getting longer and sunnier so now's the time to think about getting out the sponge and soft brushes and giving your conservatory a good clean ready for the sunny hours ahead.

You'll benefit from lower general maintenance, a longer lifespan for your conservatory and your enjoyment of using it in general.

Over the Winter, leaves and dirt will have collected in the guttering so start by cleaning out any silt or debris that could cause a blockage of the guttering system, including the down pipes and any exit points into drains or grates, before rinsing out the whole lot once you're done. Check (if possible) that water is falling freely down any downpipes.

Next, turn your attention to the conservatory roof. Check for signs of any lead flashing (the point where the conservatory meets the brick wall of your home) coming away from the rest of the property. Any gaps will be a potential for rain to get inside your home.

Then give the roof panels a good clean using a mild detergent and a soft brush or sponge. Never use harsh abrasives or stiff brushes as these can affect the glass coatings etc. Follow your conservatory installers cleaning and maintenance guides if you're at all unsure.

Pay attention to the plastic frame and any decorative ridges.

Take care if you're using a ladder or something else to stand on to reach. A better idea is one of those extendable poles with a brush or sponge attachment on the end. If you've already done the guttering first, then you can use a hose pipe to rinse off the roof afterwards.

Finally, wash and leather off the wall panels. Check the pointing on any dwarf walls is sound and doesn't need repair - particularly after a harsh winter when frost damage can cause pointing to come loose.

Now turn your attention to the window and door hinges and locks. Use a recommended lubricant to oil moving parts and check that they operate smoothly afterwards.

Now put the kettle on and sit back in the warm sun. By removing those dirty deposits, the sun will do a far better job of heating and lighting your conservatory. And the windows and doors you just oiled will open easily to let those Summer breezes in.

If you didn't fit or specify conservatory blinds when you had your conservatory first installed, why not consider them now? Blinds make a big difference to how you use your conservatory, especially in the Summer months when it can be a little too bright or warm to work or sit in.

If the idea of being able to sit out in a conservatory or perhaps using one to create a living space that is equally at home, serving as a dining area as it is a home office, then you'll want to find out how much it will cost you. But don't go calling any old company just yet.

Arm yourself with enough information to make an informed decision. Start by getting an online quote without the need for any salesman to call you. Then, use our home improvement network to directly compare conservatory companies in your area, by reading what other homeowners had to say about them - from the good to the downright 'never again' feedback of 10's of 1000's of other homeowners.

Our service is completely FREE and NO OBLIGATION to homeowners but at best it could save you pounds and at worst, save you from signing up with the wrong company.

Click here to get your online double glazing or conservatory quote now.

Interested in conservatory blinds? Click here to get an instant online conservatory blinds quote and compare companies in your area.

New glass coating technology does away with handles

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7Kb_sXsIjMs/S6yU5sfm5hI/AAAAAAAAABk/NNNzmGpt8CU/s320/brain+scan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452896967756015122" />
News reaches us that a major glass manufacturer has developed a new glass coating that could render the window hardware trade obsolete in a matter of years.

A spokesman said "Handles have always been the weakest security point on any window design. Our new coating technology will make windows that open using handles look like an antique of the 18th century".

Ready for the science bit? Here's how they'll work.

A special receptive coating is applied to the inside pane of glass of the opening part of the window. This special coating is receptive to electromagnetic brain activity. All you have to do is 'think open' when looking at a window and it will open itself.

Early trials are promising and the company hope to have the glass commercially available by Summer.

When asked "what's to stop thieves using 'thought power' to open the window?" the answer is simple - the coating only works from the inside. Furthermore, future developments using specially placed sensors will enable homeowners to open windows without being in their direct line of sight.

You can get an instant online quote for the most up to date double glazing technology by using WindowQuoter - Instant on line double glazing quotes without the need for a salesman to call.

special April Fool's Day photo credit: indi

New home owner guides to help you

When you're considering a home improvement, there's so much to think about and so many points at which it can go horribly wrong. For example, if the bad weather is coming from one direction, it may be possible to install on the sheltered side of the house. If conditions look like they may worsen during an installation, then the company will usually switch to replacing each window one at a time.

Sometimes, installers have little choice but to plough on and make the installation air and water tight. Silicone sealants won't dry in the rain so that one job may need finishing on a drier day.

There are a few things you can do to speed the process along and save your home heating bill.

Firstly, either switch off or turn down low your homes heating system on the morning of the installation. That way you'll minimalise any heat loss when the old window or door is removed.

Think about shutting internal doors to contain the cold within that particular room.

Have window sills and the working area clear of furniture and ornaments, curtains tied back or taken down etc before the installation team arrive. That way they can get on with the fitting straightaway and hopefully, your preparations will mean less time between taking out and fitting the new replacement window.

Whilst window fitters are a generally very clean and tidy lot, think about putting some kind of protective floor covering down inside to save them time and save your flooring from the worst of the wet / snowy outdoors.

If you've got an installation booked and the weather turns bad on the day / day before, why not keep in touch with your window company to know for sure whether the installation is still possible or partially possible?

WindowQuoter is more than just an online quoting website - it's also a database of 100's of double glazing companies local to you. It's this kind of achievement that's led to more and more window designs achieving a-rated energy efficiency status, when coupled with a regulated installation practice.

Make your home warmer and more energy efficient today and save money in the process. Start here by getting an instant online quote and see how much you could save.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://windowquoter.blogspot.com/2010/02/hurry-get-your-2000-window-scrappage.html' title='Hurry! When you're ready for a double glazing company to come and fit your windows, they'll take their own survey measurements (which usually includes taking 3 height and width measurements per window). If you're planning on fitting your own, see below.

For 'flat' windows, you'll need the width and the height, usually taken from between the plastered edges. It's worth measuring each end and basing your quote measurement on the larger figure. WindowQuoter works in cms. If you're approaching a window company directly, although they's prefer cms, they'll probably accept measurements in inches too.

Openers appear with in the overall window dimension; only the number of openers will affect the price of that window.

For a bay window, treat each 'panel' as a separate window and measure each panel.

If you're thinking of replacing a flat window with a bow window, Measure the overall 'hole' the window will be fitted in and then specify the number of facets (steps). Facets are usually equally spaced for aesthetic reasons. Remember a bow window will require a roof as well as a new cill board so costs will be higher. That said, it's amazing the difference a bow window can make to the amount of light allowed into your room.

For doors, both entrance, patio and french - again, you'll need to measure the width and height from the wall plaster edges. If your door has a glazed or solid panel above / at the sides, then include these in your measurement.

There's no real need to go climbing ladders and hanging precariously from the guttering to measure your windows. However, an older property may have one or two surprises which is why we'd recommend getting the professionals in for a supply and fit quote and allowing them to do the final measurement.

The problem comes from when the old windows were installed from the outside on older properties, particularly where there is no cavity. The inner wall can have a smaller hole than the outer wall so that when the frame was put in, it butted up against the inner wall brick.

When replacing these types of installations, the window company will usually have to chisel out the inner brick to match the opening of the outer brick. The window company will have the expertise to carry this out at the time of installation including any remedial plaster work once the hole has been finished.

One last point regarding the actual depth of the frames, if you have an older property, then you may benefit from the wider frame widths (70mm / 65mm) as these are designed to butt up to existing plaster surrounds yet still cover the cavity and extend into the putter wall to the correct depth.

Slimmer frame widths are usually only used in newer properties where plaster lines and cavities were designed around slimmer frames to begin with. Check with your window company what they recommend. Remember, most have had years of experience and most likely will have come up against every eventuality possible.

As tempting as it may be to think you can get away with a supply only quotation, remember the measurements are all down to you. Get it wrong and there's no comeback on the window manufacturer. You could be left with a very expensive pile of scrap upvc. Also, when fitting your own windows, it's worth remembering that it will be up to you to apply to the local council for the installations energy efficiency certificate, which is playing an increasing role in how your home is rated for services, especially when you come to sell your property - now or in the future.

Having your windows manufactured and installed by a window company means that the energy efficiency certificates are taken care of - the window companies having passed rigorous tests to be able to certify their own installations.

*Please note that the above guidelines are only intended to allow homeowners to enter reasonably accurate measurement into WindowQuoter for the purposes of getting an online quote or advising Double Glazing companies of the approximate measurements for initial quoting purposes.

If you're measuring for replacing and fitting windows yourself, you may need to take further advice from the manufacturer before they proceed with your order on the best measurement points, depending on the age and style of the existing windows.

All supply and fit orders should be measured by the companies surveyor, to ensure correctness. This probably won't be the case if you're ordering supply only windows and doors where any mistakes are usually your responsibility.

Double glazing confounds climate sceptics

Over on our Solar Panel Quoter Blog where todays renewable energy stories are reported and discussed, a recent article suggested that climate sceptics were missing the point regarding renewable energies and energy saving.

With solar energy, whilst the initial installation costs mean a long pay-back period (speeded up when you're able to make use of various Government incentive schemes for renewable energy installation etc), it does offer a pay-back period, compared to traditional energies that will never offer any pay-back and will only increase in cost.

When you think about it, the same could apply to installing double glazing.

Whilst many insulation schemes for cavity wall insulation are touted, not every home is suitable for this type of insulation. What then? Windows and doors may be the only exterior features where energy savings can be made.

Fir example, fitting double glazing with Low-e glass is reckoned to be equal to fitting triple glazing. And modern UPVC frames now feature heat insulation properties like multi chambers, engineered to offer the maximum efficiency in preventing cold outside air from reaching the warmer inside air.

Whether you fit double glazing to do your bit for the environment, make your home more comfortable and cheaper to heat or for purely aesthetic reasons, you are still making a difference to your own CO2 emissions.

Whichever way you look at it, that's got to be a good thing.

You can find out exactly how much fitting double glazing in your home will cost by using WindowQuoter - type in your own approximate window or door measurements and get a quote in seconds, online, without the need for any salesman to call.

It's a completely FREE service for anyone living in the UK.

Protect yourself from pushy doorstep double glazing salesmen

Door-to-door home improvement salesmen have a bad reputation. In terms of popularity with the general public, they probably rank somewhere between traffic wardens and politicians.

Here at Home Improvement Quotes, we’ve been working for over a decade to help homeowners like you get the best of the dreaded cold-callers.

We do this in two ways – firstly, we supply you with free guide prices before you ever talk to a salesman, so you can be confident that you’re getting a good deal. Secondly, after you get a quote we’ll help you get in contact with up to three local or national home improvements companies, so you can compare a range of quotes and services, rather than just plumping for whichever one happens to knock on your door.

When salesmen do call, though, you want to protect yourself as much as possible, and that’s why we’ve put together these tips on getting the most from home improvement salespeople:

1 - Take the pressure off - Never be pressured into signing 'on the doorstep'. A genuine home improvement salesman will give you time to make a decision.

2 - Be patient - Even if you're tempted by special offers that have to be signed for on the day. Once you've signed a contract, you have limited cancellation rights.

3 - Your right to cancel - if you've signed a contract you later regret, then act fast. A contract is legally binding document with criteria in place to stop you breaking your end of the of the 'bargain'. Check The Consumer Protection Regulations 1987.

4 - Make a short-list - Comparing quotes is the most important part of the process - compare what different companies are offering - cheapest may not be best. Check their literature or website and look for companies that are members of local trade associations, which may offer their own guarantees.

5 - Preference services - If cold calling gets on your nerves, there are a number of preference services which will remove your phone number from circulation or address. Oh the possibilities!
Incidentely, if you're having a conservatory fitted, ask the installation company about the best doorway to choose for access between your home and the new conservatory. They'll usually be able to do all the work including brick and plasterwork involved in opening up a window to a full doorway.

When getting a quote for that new or replacement door, one question that is often asked is what's the difference between french and patio doors?

In a nutshell, french doors are hinged, opening outwards (or inwards like traditional doors) whilst patio doors slide from side to side.

It depends on the dimensions of course, but you'll notice that because on a patio door, one panel will always slide in front or behind another, the overall opening is usually just that little bit bigger on a similar french door when both halves are opened.

With french doors, there's no fixed centre strut that both doors seal up to, as one door, the one usually left closed, bears the centre strut upon it. Again talk with your installation company about the best configuration that suits your home.

If you're having french doors fitted, ask about hooks and catches to hook the doors open with - they're heavy units that you don't want blowing shut on you just as you're about to walk through them.

With patio doors, any crime prevention office will tell you the weakest security point is at the top and bottom where a thief may try to prise the door of its rails by trying to lift the door panel. Additional security catches on these points will let you feel a whole lot more secure and are usually included within modern locking systems anyway, but worth checking.

Both french and patio doors should have safety glass fitted.

Of course there is another door option - one on a much grander scale. The Bi-Folding door.

Available for large or small openings and the latest in interior design, the Bi-fold door is made up of separate panels that you can open in varying degrees so that they fold back concertina style to reveal a single doorway or the whole expanse. Great for where you want to really open a room to the outside - not just for pool rooms!

You can get quotes for french or patio doors directly from WindowQuoter - simply type in your own measurements, choose your style and material and our clever website will give you an instant price guide there and then.

And if we've wetted your appetite for something a little more swish, then go to Bi-Fold Door Quoter - enter your aperture (opening) dimensions and how many panels you'd like and again, our clever website will generate a quote for you there and then - completely salesman free and based on the latest UK installation prices.

How Low-E glass can make double glazing even more efficient

How you can improve the insulation properties of double glazing by using Low-E glass.

Double glazing can halve the loss of heat through your windows. Whilst a small proportion of this saving is in the multi chambered frames and seals, the two panes of glass make the biggest contribution thanks to that all important gap between the two panes of glass in the 'sealed unit' - so called because two panes of glass are bonded to an internal spacing before the whole assembly is sealed around the edge.

The GGF website claims that the optimum space between panes starts at 20mm. A smaller gap will mean more heat loss.

One popular way in which homeowners can increase the efficiency of their double glazing is to choose Low-E glass (Low emissivity glass).

The process involves a microscopically thin coating applied to the gap (or cavity) pointing face of the inner pane of glass.

This special coating reflects longer wavelength heat from the room back into the building, meanwhile, it allows warming short wavelength heat from the sun in. This solar energy converts to longer wavelength heat in your room, which in turn, then isn't allowed to escape back outside past the coated pane.

Many believe that Low-E glass has similar energy saving properties to normal triple glazing, which could be a deciding factor if the extra weight of triple glazed units was a factor in installation.

What's more, Low-E glass is available on not only ordinary glass, but laminated and toughened glass too so it can also be used on patio and french doors - in fact anywhere the specification calls for toughened or safety glass to be used.

Low-E glass double glazing can be improved further still.

Using an inert gas like Argon which is sealed into the air space between the two panes of glass. Argon has better thermal properties than ordinary air and so contributes to a windows lower U value. The lower the U value, the greater the energy savings and thermal insulation offered.

Typical U values (as taken from the GGF - Glass & Glazing Federation website):
Single clear glass - 5.4U
With ordinary double glazing this is improved to 2.6U
With Low-E glass, the U value is reduced to 1.8U
Where Argon gas is used to fill the air gap, the U value will reduce to 1.6U

Environmentally friendly, energy efficient double glazing

30% of your homes heat loss occurs through the windows and doors, so when you're shopping for new or replacement double glazing, it makes sense to invest in the most thermally efficient installation you can afford.

Of course nothing is simple and double glazing companies will throw an array of figures and industry standards at you to convince you that their product is better than everyone else's but how do you really know what all that jargon stands for?

We've put together a quick and handy guide over at our parent blog - www.home-improvement-blog.co.uk. Use our simple guide below.

What is an RSS Feed?
News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines (and video) in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.

Feeds are also known as RSS. There is some discussion as to what RSS stands for, but most people plump for 'Really Simple Syndication'. In essence, the feeds themselves are just web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people.

How do I start using it?
In general, the first thing you need is something called a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. Some are email based - check if your email program can handle RSS subscriptions.

Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.

Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive.

If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including by dragging the URL of the feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader. Most sites that offer feeds use a similar orange button, but some may just have a normal web link.

Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically check for feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to feeds much easier. But what about old upvc double glazing? Do you think to ask about recycling that?

Sadly, large amounts of uPVC from window frames still ends up going in to landfill, where it can pollute and damage the environment.

There's no longer a serious technological barrier to recycling the PVC used in windows - technology has progressed to the point where PVC can be recycled not just once, but many times over before it becomes unusable. The process itself is also remarkably efficient and the chemicals used in recycling can be used many times over without losing their effectiveness.

*Over 50,000 tonnes of recovered PVC was recycled in 2008, 8,000 more than in 2007. Whilst this is great progress, and indeed puts Britain ahead of the rest of Europe in terms of the amount of PVC we recycle, it is still estimated to represent less than 10% of the PVC wastage created in Britain.

This is why it's important to ask your window supplier, indeed all of the three window suppliers Window Quoter can help you get in touch with, what they will be doing with the windows they remove from your house; whether they are part of a PVC recycling scheme; and - even more importantly - whether the new frames they are install will be at least partially constructed from recycled PVC.

When you buy recycled products, you're helping to reduce the amount of landfill sites we need, reduce the amount of pollution we cause, and lessen the impact of our species on the planet. Don't forget to check.

*an abridged version of an article first appearing on Home Improvement Quotes Blog earlier this year.

uPVC double glazing window maintenance - prolonging their life

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 227px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7Kb_sXsIjMs/SvQC_yNStHI/AAAAAAAAAA0/KiwzxM2VRZc/s400/window_maintenance.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400945147956606066" />
Spotted on Home Improvement Quotes Blog - Prolonging the life of your uPVC windows and doors.

One of the major selling points of uPVC frames is the relatively small amount of ongoing maintenance they require, in comparison to other materials.

Whilst it’s true that they do not require a great deal of maintenance, though, there are still a few things you should keep a close check on if you want to maximise the potential life of your units – and keeping on top of window maintenance could save you thousands of pounds further on down the line.

Maintenance is especially important if the window or door in question is a fire escape route, whether that be at home or in a commercial setting.

The most common problems come when handles or locking mechanisms break, or the hinges seize up. These mechanisms make up the majority of the moving parts of the window frame Thankfully, taking just a few minutes every 6 to 12 months is all it takes.

Read the full article on the Home Improvement Quotes Blog by clicking here.

Pets out of the way - on Double Glazing installation day

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 270px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7Kb_sXsIjMs/Su8KNAog2MI/AAAAAAAAAAs/Zo35nFUxVSA/s320/cat_shower.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399545696865016002" />
The next time you've got your friendly local home improvement company round doing a spot of double glazing installation or loft converting - not to mention kitchen fitting or converting your garage - it might be a good idea to remove your pets to a safe, quiet out-of-the-way location.

Not that we're suggesting you put your pet in the shower as happened to our furry feline friend in the picture above.

No - despite the best efforts of your home improvement company, the occasional loud noise can be like a firework going off to a pet. Worse still, the inquisitive little animals can easily trip workmen up - not something you want when there's glass or worktops being carried around or even get in half opened spaces during construction.

Have you ever tried to get a pet out of somewhere that you can't physically reach into? They have a nasty habit of pleasing themselves when they come out.

So save yourself some possible time and trouble, your home improvement company some possible hazard and your pet some definate inconvenience by considering shutting them away in a quiet corner of the house or even perhaps consider holiday kennels for those few days.

It will all help make your home improvement as stress free as possible.

One of many

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 230px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7Kb_sXsIjMs/SuhWU213_DI/AAAAAAAAAAk/srbS8LoSDYY/s400/windowquoter_screengrab.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397659069722393650" />
Once a Homeowner's used our online quoting websites and got their online quote, we offer a complimentary service (after speaking with the homeowner and getting their express permission) whereby we match their location and home improvement project details with our database of approved companies and find the top 3 based on quality, location and price.

The companies then get in contact with the homeowner direct.

The beauty is that the companies know that two other companies will be quoting so you - the homeowner - gets their best price, first time without having to haggle.

Homeowners also get their own online area to log in and leave feedback on their dealings with that company. This helps us improve our service and monitor our 'approved companies' where it matters most - in their dealings with you.

So it's always especially nice to get singled out ourselves for the part we've played in bringing home owner and home improvement company together, like this recent email we received....

In response to using WindowQuoter for a quote on a conservatory....

3 Companies contacted me and discussed requirements, all were courteous and professional. No hard sale of products but very informative and followed up with written quotes and the offer of a site visit.

I was impressed with the speed in which all 3 made initial contact. Whilst current grants exist to cover installation of cavity wall insulation and other energy saving measures, this is unsuitable for many homes and some people are left unable to claim any money for improving their energy efficiency.

If your home is not adequately insulated, you could be bleeding money through your walls every single month. As your heating system struggles to provide warmth to your home, your walls may be leaking it out again just as quickly.

Replacing single glazed windows with double glazed units with an energy saving rating of ‘C’ or higher can have a dramatic effect on your fuel consumption and reduce your energy bills dramatically. Double glazing also has benefits in reducing noise and improving safety and security.

The government’s ‘Warm Front’ scheme offers a grant to enable people to install cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and other energy-saving measures. Whilst this is very welcome and helps thousands of people stay efficient, not every home has cavities in its walls suitable for fitting cavity wall insulation. Many people end up being unable to take advantage of the available grants and unable to insulate their properties.

And so, many people get left behind, unable to insulate their homes and unable to get grants to improve the energy efficiency of the building they live in.

That’s why a campaign has begun to ask the government to make a grant available to people who are unable to insulate their homes with cavity wall insulation and wish to install double glazing. On the Number 10 Downing Street website, the petition reads:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to make available a grant to purchase Double Glazing enabling those house holders who do not have cavity walls to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and cut energy bills

If the campaign is successful, homeowners could potentially receive grants in excess of £1000 to carry out double glazing projects and improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

To get an instant, online quote for double glazing and discover how much you might expect to pay to re-glaze your house, use WindowQuoter.co.uk, part of the Home Improvement Quotes
