How do you fit double glazing when it's raining?

Whether you've already gone ahead and arranged for a double glazing company to come and install new double glazing on your home or you're thinking of getting new windows or doors installed, it's an obvious question.

Unless there's a torrential downpour or blizzard blowing, the installation will usually go ahead (the bad weather at the start of 2010 was so severe that many double glazing companies reported being unable to get to installations because of the road conditions or that conditions were so slippery, ladders where unsafe and they could only install the ground floor windows until the weather improved).

Most bad weather can be worked around. For example, if the bad weather is coming from one direction, it may be possible to install on the sheltered side of the house. If conditions look like they may worsen during an installation, then the company will usually switch to replacing each window one at a time.

Sometimes, installers have little choice but to plough on and make the installation air and water tight. Silicone sealants won't dry in the rain so that one job may need finishing on a drier day.

There are a few things you can do to speed the process along and save your home heating bill.

Firstly, either switch off or turn down low your homes heating system on the morning of the installation. That way you'll minimalise any heat loss when the old window or door is removed.

Think about shutting internal doors to contain the cold within that particular room.

Have window sills and the working area clear of furniture and ornaments, curtains tied back or taken down etc before the installation team arrive. That way they can get on with the fitting straightaway and hopefully, your preparations will mean less time between taking out and fitting the new replacement window.

Whilst window fitters are a generally very clean and tidy lot, think about putting some kind of protective floor covering down inside to save them time and save your flooring from the worst of the wet / snowy outdoors.

If you've got an installation booked and the weather turns bad on the day / day before, why not keep in touch with your window company to know for sure whether the installation is still possible or partially possible?
