New glass coating technology does away with handles
News reaches us that a major glass manufacturer has developed a new glass coating that could render the window hardware trade obsolete in a matter of years.
A spokesman said "Handles have always been the weakest security point on any window design. Our new coating technology will make windows that open using handles look like an antique of the 18th century".
Ready for the science bit? Here's how they'll work.
A special receptive coating is applied to the inside pane of glass of the opening part of the window. This special coating is receptive to electromagnetic brain activity. All you have to do is 'think open' when looking at a window and it will open itself.
Early trials are promising and the company hope to have the glass commercially available by Summer.
When asked "what's to stop thieves using 'thought power' to open the window?" the answer is simple - the coating only works from the inside. Furthermore, future developments using specially placed sensors will enable homeowners to open windows without being in their direct line of sight.
